1st March 2012
World Book Day is a worldwide celebration of authors, illustrators, books and of reading in over 100 countries.
To mark the 15th year anniversary of the event, all of Audenshaw’s pupils and members of staff came together to celebrate the pleasure of books and the hobby of reading. At exactly 2.00pm last Thursday, the school bell rang and lessons were suspended for the day. Pupils and staff embraced the opportunity to spend half an hour simply enjoying reading for pleasure the books, magazines or newspapers that they were encouraged to bring in. The overwhelming support from us all ensured that the end of the day was a relaxing and pleasurable one.
Pupils also received a book voucher on Thursday: hopefully, hundreds of pupils will take their voucher to any local bookshop and use it to pick one of eight new and completely free books. Or, if they’d prefer, they can use it to get £1 off any book or audio book costing over £2.99 at a participating bookshop.
Our first whole-school celebration of the event now marks the beginning of a yearly celebration of World Book Day at Audenshaw School. As Head of the English Department, it was exciting to hear both staff and pupils discussing reading together in such an enthusiastic and excitable way. On the website are a series of pictures taken on the day which clearly show how successful the event was.
We are 100% committed to helping children explore the pleasure of books.

Four of our Sixth Formers entered the competition for Business Studies which involved the team presenting their ideas about the ideal interest rate for our economy at the moment to reduce inflation. The competition was run by the Bank of England and is a national competition where schools from around the country compete.

Our team; Siobhan Pickford (Captain), Sam Ellis, Alex Wood and Sabah Ayub, all presented their findings brilliantly in front of the panel of judges. Although it was a nerve wracking experience they showed real professionalism competing against mainly private schools in the North West.

Unfortunately they didn’t win, but a big congratulations go to them for trying really hard and representing Audenshaw School well. We will be back next year!
