Last Saturday saw the opening fixtures of the season and a proud tradition at Audenshaw School continued as a new crop of year 7 players took to the pitch for the first time in Red and White.

With numbers of up to 50 attending each training session, Mr. Leach had a very difficult task of player identification across Summer Camp and the first week of school. The boys, some of which playing their first ever games of rugby, proudly played at Bolton School and joined the tradition that many have before them.
Both teams went home happy after a high-spirited game ending in a 15-15 draw. The year 8 team had a deserved win following their hard work in the summer holidays. Summer holidays? ‘What are those?’ the boys asked as they turned up on Tuesdays and Thursdays to train.

The year 9s, who had previously never beaten their Bolton counterparts, had a well-fought win; with five new additions to the squad this year, they look like a serious contender for silverware. Watch this space. The year 10s and 11s, also off the back of a summer holiday pre-season program, have begun to train together allowing for opposed team runs and expertise coaching of forwards and backs separately. They both had victories in their opening fixtures too with the yr11’s recording their first win in 5 years over Bolton.

The year 10s had an additional victory over Stonyhurst school midweek. Not bad results for teams of local, hardworking and dedicated boys to come away with victories against private schools. A number of boys have been rewarded for their commitment to the sport: Year 11 student M. Williams-Reed continues to excel at professional club Warrington Wolves and Sale Sharks have invited a number of boys to trial again this season after successful pursuits in their DPP squad. The school and the PE Department are excited at the prospect of no less than 20 year 9-11s trialling with Sale Sharks and hope to see the long line of Audenshaw boys entering the professional game continue. Rugby continues to be a vital part of the school and boys continue to grow and develop as they play and train with us. Each team trains twice per week and has a comprehensive Saturday fixture list. Parental support in these opening weeks has, as always, been excellent. We thank you for your support and look forward to seeing many of you on the sidelines throughout the season.
