International Day

By Mr Shanker

Thursday July 8th saw Audenshaw School's very first International Day.
The idea was to celebrate all things 'international' throughout the Curriculum and beyond. This required a whole school / collaborative approach to the day and it was lovely to experience pupils, staff and subject departments all 'pulling together' to make a successful day.
Clearly, the day proved very popular with a range of activities being offered to all year groups in different ways. Fairtrade stalls were run by the Sixth form in the School Canteen. There was a shanty town building contest and the Music Department organised a Fairtrade rap with all of year 9.
At dinner time, there was a water carrying exercise to replicate the plight of many women transporting water over long distances. Mr Bannatyne, Miss Smart and Mr Stewart ran taster sessions in Italian pasta making, Japanese and 'world travel' respectively. The School Canteen organised a 'world food' lunch at dinner time. The staff were treated to international food tasting throughout the day. Mr Watt organised a World Cup football tournament for year 7 at the end of the day which, not surprisingly, proved a very popular event.
Mr Walters and Mrs Dav were the perfect 'icing on the cake' when they returned to the school to share world culture with many of our pupils.
I would personally like to thank everybody involved in this project and look forward to developing this further next year.
