By Mr Donnelly.
We are no sleepy backwater when it comes to team or individual performance, as you can see from the sports achievement boards to my left and the sportsman of the year boards in the sports hall. Only yesterday we received the Tameside award for “Outstanding performance in competition”. In recent years we have won National championships in Football and Basketball, become Lancashire champions in Rugby and Cricket as well as North West Emerging schools Champions in Rugby League two years running. In the last two years we have had two England Footballers in Tom Thorpe and Ellis Plummer. Tahir El Mahdi was selected to play rugby for England, Ben Stelmaszek for the North of England and no less than 8 Players represented their county at Rugby and two at cricket
As you can appreciate being one of the top sports performers at Audenshaw School is a big deal!
Year 7
In year 7 we have a number of sportsmen with a great deal of potential. Some in individual sports but we prefer to make our award to the younger pupils to individuals who epitomise the Audenshaw spirit of excellence and participation. Winners are always good role models and are well behaved and demonstrate our expected levels of sportsmanship.
The runners up for the award take part in most of the sports offered including Rugby , Football, Cricket and Athletics. However the winner does this as well as one extra thing.... He plays for his county.
Runners up are Ben Smith and Matthew Lomax and the winner is Lancashire cricketer Jody Clough. Big round of applause please as they collect their awards.
Year 8.
In year 8 we do not have the overall strength of sportsman as we have in some years but what we do have is a core of superbly committed performers who take every opportunity given to them and conduct themselves well every time they represent their school. It can be said that none of the three award winners in year 8 are the best any of the sports they do. But they are all sportsmen in the traditional Audenshaw mould.
Runners up are last years winner Cameron Pugh, and Matthew Lowndes and the winner is Connor Street.
I feel special mention should also go to Denver Massey who is clearly the most gifted sportsman in year 8. He incidentally knocked 2 seconds off the school record at the Tameside Athletics Championships. He will certainly win this award in the next few years if he can balance all his commitments and stay out of detention long enough to attend some training sessions!
Thank you very much!.
