Sports Review of the Year.

By Mr Donnelly.

Following in the footsteps of last year’s National Football Cup, this year was another outstanding one on the sports field for Audenshaw pupils.

The outstanding individual achievement of the year belonged to yr 10 Ellis Plummer. The Manchester City academy player represented England U16 on several occasions a full year before he reaching the age group. We are also grateful that he represents his school whenever possible and he has developed into a modest and mature young man. He is an excellent role model to the young aspiring sportsmen we have in the school. For this we have decided to award him the school’s “Outstanding Sporting Achievement Award”, last awarded to Simon Horsfield (Great Britain Athletics) and Tom Thorpe (England U16 Football).
We have been lucky enough to have at least one international representative in each of the last 4 years but this year we have had three. Year 11 Tahir El Madhi was selected to represent England U16 Rugby after representing the school, Sale Sharks, Lancashire and the North of England side with distinction. Unfortunately he was unable to play for England as a knee injury he sustained during the season became worse and required surgery. We wish him all the best for the future as he leaves us to pursue his rugby career with the Leicester Tigers Academy.
Our 3rd International is yr 13 Hannah Mitchell. She was a world junior champion before she became one of our 6th form students and she has continued to represent Great Britain at Sailing throughout the 2 years with us. She is extremely dedicated balancing her studies with travelling down to Dorset almost every weekend. She leaves us with our best wishes for her Sailing and her continued studies.
Rugby
Ben Stelmaszek represented Lancashire and the North of England at U18 Level. He also represented Lancashire at U20 in the prestigious National County championships.   Michael Moreland represented Lancashire at U16 and a number of our successful U15 team represented Lancashire including Sam Stelmaszek, Dan Lomax, Ryan Harding, Dominic O’Connor and Connor Ward.
Mr Jennings’ 1st team lead by Dale Jackson and Sam Kelly showed a great deal of “spirit and heart” to regain their Lancashire plate, a feat also achieved by the U15 lead by Dan Lomax. The much improved U14 team developed significantly under Mr Rose’s demanding training regime narrowly lost their Lancashire cup semi final to eventual winners Lancaster Grammar.
Audenshaw teams played with distinction throughout the north west in 7’s competitions and we are fast developing a strong reputation in this version of the game. The u14 won the prestigious Kirkham 7’s defeating 5 independent schools along the way including the hosts and Manchester Grammar. Audenshaw teams also played successfully in the Stonyhurst, Woodhouse Grove and National School’s sevens as well as our own U12 and U15’s tournaments. Our yr 7 also had a successful Rugby trip to Bath and Wales which included watching the Sale Sharks play Bath.
On the 18th July Audenshaw Rugby departs on its biggest event of the year. 32 Boys are to play a 5 game tour of South Africa lead by Mr Jennings with Mr Rose, Mr Loader and Miss Crowley. It has been an enormous task for Mr Jennings to organise.   The boys and staff have contributed significantly with fundraising. I am sure you will join me in wishing them the best of luck.
This summer saw Audenshaw rugby teams continue to emerge in the 13 a side code. The U14 and U15 teams won the North West emerging schools championships and a combined team boasting no less than 8 Rugby League scholarship players beat the Yorkshire emerging champions St Bede’s, Bradford in a “Roses” clash held at the Wildespool Stadium, former home to the Warrington Wolves.
Football.
The Audenshaw teams expanded their range of competition this year entering the local leagues as well as the local, county and national cups under the enthusiastic guidance of Mr Watt.
The year 10 team were not able to repeat their achievements of last year but did win the local league, cup and reached the semi final of the county cup. The year 9 team were league winners but lost narrowly in the cup final.
Cricket

The sad demise of the local cup competition has resulted in the Lancashire cup being the only competition for our cricketers. However with the quality of our players there was always going to be some success. Well done to Yr7 Jody Clough who became yet another Audenshaw boy representing Lancashire at cricket.
The U15 beat Manchester Grammar in the ¼ final before losing to eventual winners Bolton School. The 1st XI reached the finals day of their Lancashire 20:20 competition. They won their semi final comfortably before losing narrowly in the final.
Athletics
Jamie Roden, Connor White, Lewis Christian, Jack Johnson and Max Cole where among the boys who represented Tameside in the Greater Manchester Championships. In the Tameside championships Audenshaw medal winners were numerous. Denver Massey smashed the school record in winning the junior boys 400m. Jonathan Wilbraham also won the 800m in the same age group. In the Inter boys winners included: Jack Johnson (100m) and Niall Maher (TJ).
Basketball
The Basketball teams have now passed into a development phase following the departure to university of the last of our crop of outstanding players. Mr Brooks and Mrs Sallabank along with some of our sixth form players have worked to develop the lower school players. The year 8 team won the Tameside cup and the yr 9 and 10 teams played well reaching the 1/4 final stages.
Audenshaw School continues to be successful in many sports due to the enthusiasm of the pupils, the strong links with local clubs and above all the time and dedication of the staff involved and I would like to thank them all for their hard work.
